As a photographer and small business owner, it is essential in 2025 to be digitally minded to grow your work and grow in line with technological advancement. Moore's law suggests "that the number of transistors on a microchip roughly doubles every two years," so whilst this directly affects the efficiency and power of our cameras, it affects our business practice, inclusivity and advancement as a business.
From a practical standpoint, Moore's law and the growth of camera equipment have significantly advanced the power and accessible use of equipment, even on the most basic level. This means small business owners have more access to top photographic assistance and quality materials; however, this same element also makes many businesses or jobs redundant. As Applied Arts discusses the quality and increasing computing," the advancements in mirrorless cameras have enabled anyone with a smartphone to call themselves photographers". This means the demand for professional photographers is diminishing, and the market is becoming oversaturated.
Something to consider with this exponential growth is the learning curve; being digitally minded and expecting changes and growth can allow a business to build an unmatched skill set that combines many digital advancements into one unbeatable service. Combining traditional photography knowledge with modern digital practices like Improved equipment, AI, automation and streamlined technology can help a photographer break cultural and interpersonal boundaries through knowledge and growing creativity.
So, whilst Moore's law suggests exponential growth in technology, how you approach this growth will be essential to how your small business survives and creates its own culture and community in an oversaturated market and platform. Things to consider as concerns for this growth will be the cost of advancing equipment, security and copyright and your learning curves around new technology.
But if digital growth is embraced and regular learning and updates on technological advancements are implemented as a foundation of a photography business, then there is no reason that the business can't grow in line with the technology it uses and build unique content, unique management and therefore a unique business that surpasses any market oversaturation.
